Nicolas Bernier is a professor in composition and sound creation at the Faculty of Music of the Université de Montréal. With around twenty recognitions from prestigious competitions in both music and contemporary arts, his work frequencies (a) won a Golden Nica awarded by Ars Electronica in 2013, one of the major recognitions in the field of digital arts. In 2019, he published the book Sur le diapason with Presses du réel, concluding the frequencies cycle of works. His audiovisual piece titled structures infinies was nominated and exhibited in London at the Aesthetica Art Prize in the same year. His landmark installation frequencies (light quanta) will be exhibited until 2026 at ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Germany and is part of the permanent collection at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. Over the past two decades, his work in sound performances and installations has been presented worldwide in institutions such as Ars Electronica, Sónar, Mutek, and Transmediale. Bernier's research-creation explores the performativity of electronic sound and engages in dialogue with prominent artists across various disciplines. He also collaborates with various artists, producing nearly fifty albums, receiving commendations for his contributions to contemporary and electroacoustic music, including winning the Opus Prize for Album of the Year. Since 2016, he leads the Ensemble d’oscillateurs, a project focused on electronic music and pedagogy, while actively contributing to research and artistic creation within the field of sound.
