Biography

Nicolas Loizou is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Johns Hopkins University. He holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Computer Science and is affiliated with the Data Science AI Institute. His research interests encompass large-scale optimization, machine learning, randomized algorithms, randomized numerical linear algebra, and decentralized algorithms in game theory. His current research focuses on convex and non-convex optimization and addressing large-scale machine learning problems through innovative methods. He has received several awards and fellowships including the 2019 Doctoral Award from the Society for Operational Research and the IVADO postdoctoral fellowship. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins in January 2022, he was an IVADO postdoctoral fellow at the Mila-Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute and earned his doctoral degree in operational research optimization from the University of Edinburgh in 2019. He also holds a master’s degree in computing from Imperial College London (2015) and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens (2014).
