Dr. Nicolas Loizou

Biography

Nicolas Loizou is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Johns Hopkins University, with a secondary appointment at the Mathematical Institute for Data Science (MINDS). His research primarily focuses on optimization techniques including both convex and non-convex optimization, as well as large-scale machine learning and data science problems. Nicolas has previously held a postdoctoral fellowship at IVADO, where he collaborated on significant optimization theory frameworks. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, under the supervision of Peter Richtarik, and completed his MSc in Computing at Imperial College London. His academic journey includes extensive teaching and active participation in conferences, such as NeurIPS and AISTATS, where he presents his findings on stochastic methods and optimization algorithms. Nicolas is also involved in mentoring students in their research endeavors and serves on editorial boards for various scientific journals.
