Nicolas Macris received his PhD in theoretical physics from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and has pursued scientific activities in the mathematics department at Rutgers University (NJ, USA). He joined the Faculty of Basic Science at EPFL, where he specializes in quantum statistical mechanics and the mathematical aspects of the quantum Hall effect. In 2005, he was involved with the Communication Theories Laboratory and the Information Processing group and currently works at the interface of statistical mechanics, information theory, error correcting codes, and inference learning theory. He has held long-term visiting appointments and collaborations with University College Institute of Advanced Studies in Dublin, École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, and ETH Zürich, among others. His research interests focus on aspects of quantum information theory, including mathematical physics of quantum Coulomb systems and quantum statistical mechanical models related to condensed matter physics. He has been involved in organizing themed publications on inference learning theory and has authored numerous articles in prestigious journals.
