Dr. Nicolás Peleato

Biography

Nicolás Miguel Peleato is an assistant professor at the Okanagan campus of the University of British Columbia. He obtained his PhD from the University of Toronto, focusing on advanced characterization of organic matter for the evaluation of drinking water treatment processes and assessing source water quality. His research has evolved during a postdoctoral fellowship where he evaluated the role and mechanisms of protein conformation in membrane fouling at a fundamental level. He is particularly interested in integrating data analysis and machine learning methods to enhance water quality insights. His ultimate research goal is to develop low-cost and simple pre-treatment methods to improve drinking water treatment systems. Prior to joining academia, Dr. Peleato worked in an environmental engineering firm specializing in issues related to drinking water treatment systems, where he played a lead role in designing leachate collection systems and portable drinking water distribution systems for large-scale events. At UBC, he aims to advance technology and evaluation methods for monitoring drinking water treatment through integrated large-scale data analysis and hands-on research, furthering the understanding of the fundamental mechanisms relevant to advanced water treatment operations. Dr. Peleato is an accredited professional engineer and a member of the American Water Works Association.
