Biography

Nicolas Voelcker's key research interest lies in the fabrication and surface modification of porous semiconductor materials for applications in biosensors, biochips, biomaterials, and drug delivery. His core research activity in the laboratory studies porous silicon-based nanostructures and surface chemistry, with a current focus on the development of new nanostructured materials for biosensors, biochips, biomaterials, and drug delivery systems. Voelcker received fellowships from the German Research Foundation (DFG), CSIRO, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and he has been recognized with the Tall Poppy Science Award and as a finalist for the South Australian Scientist of the Year in 2015. He served on the College of Experts of the Australian Research Council and is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering. Voelcker completed his BSc at the University of Saarland (1993), MSc at RWTH Aachen (1995), and his PhD thesis at the DWI Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials in 1999, focusing on polymer surface chemistry. Following his postdoctoral fellowships at the Scripps Research Institute in California, he became a lecturer at Flinders University in Australia in 2001, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006, and achieved full professorship in 2008. He has held prominent roles including Associate Head of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Flinders University and Deputy Director of the Mawson Institute at the University of South Australia, and he currently serves as the Scientific Director at the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication and as a Professor at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
