Biography

Nicole Barrett is an Associate Professor and Teaching Director of the International Justice Human Rights Clinic at the Peter Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia. She teaches courses on international human rights, international criminal law, and international humanitarian law. Professor Barrett has extensive experience in international legal contexts, having worked with various international courts and tribunals as well as numerous domestic and non-governmental organizations. Her research interests focus on human rights, international criminal law, corruption, and human trafficking. From 2015 to 2019, she served as the Executive Director of the Allard Prize for International Integrity and has been actively involved in promoting human rights initiatives through public events and discussions. Prior to her academic career, she practiced law at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York, specializing in complex white-collar criminal litigation. Additionally, she has held positions as a Legal Officer at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and as an international humanitarian law advisor at Guantánamo Bay. Professor Barrett holds a Masters in International Affairs and a Juris Doctorate from Columbia Law School, where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and Articles Editor of the Columbia Human Rights Law Review.
