Biography

Nicole Julia Giannella is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Classics at Cornell University. She received her Ph.D. in Classics from the University of Southern California in 2014. Her research focuses on the themes of slavery and freedom as represented in Roman legal, literary, and philosophical texts. She is the author of the book titled 'Mind Slave: Limits of Ownership in Roman Law and Society', published by the University of Michigan Press. Currently, she is embarking on a new project that involves the study of letters pertaining to enslavement. Giannella’s research interests include Roman law, society, ancient history, and Latin literature, particularly in how these themes intersect with concepts of slavery and freedom.
