Biography

Nicole Kaneider studies the communication of innate immune cells and is particularly interested in G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and the cellular consequences of their activation. She is focused on the genetic locus of the orphan GPCR GPR35, which has a coding variant receptor associated with an increased risk of inflammatory bowel disease and primary sclerosing cholangitis. Despite this association, the endogenous and relevant ligands that influence the function of GPR35 remain enigmatic. Kaneider’s work has discovered that GPR35 regulates the ion homeostasis and metabolic proliferative activity of cells by interacting with the sodium-potassium pump. She specifically designs lipopeptides, known as ‘pepducins’, to modulate GPR35 function and investigate how genetic dysfunction can be corrected through chemical or pharmacological manipulation, especially in the context of risk variants.
