Biography

Nicole D. Marino is an esteemed researcher in the Department of Biomedical Graduate Studies at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. She holds a B.A. in Biochemistry & Cell Biology and Classical Studies from Rice University, awarded in 2011, and a Ph.D. in Microbiology Immunology from Stanford University, obtained in 2017. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms bacteria utilize to block and interrupt phage infection, as well as how phages adapt to evade bacterial defenses. The Marino lab is dedicated to exploring various aspects of bacterial anti-phage systems, including the interactions between phages and the multi-layered bacterial defense systems. Current projects aim to determine the triggers of phage-encoded anti-CRISPR mechanisms and to identify the proteins that inhibit bacterial defense mechanisms. Nicole's work contributes to the understanding of virus-host interactions and the evolutionary dynamics of bacterial immunity, making significant strides in microbiology and immunology.
