Biography

Nicole Nugent, PhD, is a Professor and Research Scholar in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Alpert Brown Medical School. She holds several key academic appointments, including in the Departments of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine. As the Director of the Rhode Island Resilience Lab and Associate Director of the Stress Trauma Resilience (STAR) Initiative, Dr. Nugent is dedicated to understanding the psychological impacts of trauma and resilience. An active member of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, she has served in significant roles including co-chair of the 2013 scientific conference and Vice President, and she coordinates various educational initiatives. Dr. Nugent teaches courses on psychology, stress, trauma, and resilience, maintaining a strong clinical presence through her integrated care work with families who are survivors of war and violence. She has been continuously federally funded since 2009, serving as Principal Investigator on multiple grants that explore the biological and social factors influencing psychological outcomes following trauma. Her research focuses on traumatic stress disorders, resilience, and interventions designed to mitigate the effects of trauma on individuals, particularly adolescents and vulnerable populations.
