Biography

Nicole Stremlau is a Professor of Law at the University of Oxford, where she heads the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies. In 2024, she will be a Research Professor at the School of Communications at the University of Johannesburg. Her research focuses on the intersection of socio-legal studies, communications, digital technologies, and international development, particularly related to Africa. Her work has appeared in prominent journals addressing issues in African affairs and human rights. With extensive field research experience in the Horn of Africa and South Africa, she leads international research projects, including the European Research Council's ConflictNet project. She has contributed to the Horizon Europe ‘Resilient Media in the Digital Age’ initiative and has collaborated with various organizations, including the African Union and the United Nations. Dr. Stremlau also directs the Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute and regularly participates in public discussions on media policy.
