Dr. Nicole Turner

Biography

Nicole Myers Turner joined the Princeton Department of Religion as an Assistant Professor in 2022. She specializes in African American religious and political gender history in the nineteenth century, utilizing Africana Studies and Black Digital Humanities methods in her research. Her book, "Soul Liberty: Evolution of Black Religious Politics Post-Emancipation Virginia" (University of North Carolina Press, 2020), narrates the transformation of Black religious and political strategies that occurred from 1865 to 1890. In addition to being published as a paperback, the book is also available as an open-access enhanced e-book through Fulcrum Press, which features interactive images and maps. "Soul Liberty" has been widely reviewed and was a finalist for the 2021 Library of Virginia Literary Nonfiction Award. Moreover, Turner is researching the history of Black Protestants and their political actions during the Emancipation period, and she has written essays on Black Christianity, Emancipation, and the intersections of African American religion and politics. Currently, she is focusing on early African American religious history themes, including physical, social, and affective movement.
