Biography

Niels Bovenschen studied Medical Biology at the Free University Amsterdam, obtaining his PhD in 2003 from Sanquin Research in Amsterdam. In 2004, he moved to the Department of Pathology at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht). His research group focuses on the effector immune response related to eliminating tumor cells and virus-infected cells, aiming to improve cancer immunotherapy. Niels is in charge of the UMC Utrecht Pathology Research Laboratory and heads the Laboratory of Translational Immunology, which serves as a core facility for proteins. He was appointed Senior Fellow in 2017 and Principal Fellow in 2020 at Utrecht University. His mission includes engaging undergraduate students in science and creating synergies in education, scientific research, and healthcare at an early undergraduate level. He emphasizes multidisciplinary collaboration, enabling students to work on relevant problems in the healthcare domain.
