Biography

Niels Deen is a Full Professor and Chair of the Power & Flow group in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His expertise lies primarily in process technology, multiphase reactors, as well as computational and experimental fluid dynamics. His research focuses on the development of computational and experimental techniques for studying multiphase reactors, specifically exploring the reduction of fine iron powder as part of the iron power cycle, bubble dynamics for hydrogen production, and modeling multiphase reactive flows for green steelmaking. The goal of his research is to optimize the sustainability of processes and equipment by establishing solid foundational principles in multiphase flows. Niels earned his PhD from Aalborg University in Esbjerg and has held positions at University of Twente and TU/e, where he has contributed significantly to the field through various research projects and collaborations with major chemical industries in the Netherlands. He has served as an editor for the journal Chemical Engineering Science and has been involved with multiple academic and research organizations, including the J.M. Burgerscentrum and the Eindhoven Institute of Renewable Energy Systems. Niels has received a Starting Grant from the European Research Council to advance his work on micro-structured bubble column reactors.
