Biography

Niels Johannesen is the Director of the Oxford University Centre for Business Taxation at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, and a part-time Professor of Economics at the University of Copenhagen. He joined Saïd Business School in 2023, bringing over ten years of experience from the University of Copenhagen. Niels Holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Copenhagen and has held visiting positions at prestigious institutions such as the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Michigan, and the European University Institute in Florence. His research mainly focuses on taxation of firms and capital, household finance, tax evasion, tax avoidance, and tax havens, as well as global policy initiatives designed to enhance tax compliance. His work on household finance deals with how households make spending, investment, and saving decisions in response to economic shocks. Niels has published several papers, including works examining the effects of monetary policy on inequality and the capture of foreign aid through offshore bank accounts. Additionally, he contributes actively to policy discussions related to offshore tax evasion and has given talks based on his research to organizations such as the OECD Global Forum and the European Commission, as well as to parliaments in Denmark and the Netherlands. He is currently serving on the Expert Committee on Business Subsidies appointed by the Danish government.
