Biography

Niels Walet is a professor in the Theoretical Physics Group at the University of Manchester, where he also serves as Associate Dean for Online Flexible Learning in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. He earned his undergraduate degree in Theoretical Physics with Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Utrecht, where he also obtained his doctorate in the area of theoretical nuclear physics. Niels has held research positions in Amsterdam, Philadelphia, and Erlangen before joining UMIST Manchester as a lecturer, eventually progressing to senior lecturer and reader. His research focuses on several areas in theoretical nuclear physics and condensed matter physics, including the exact renormalisation group, the (nuclear) many-body problem, and topological excitations in condensed matter systems. He is also active in educational initiatives, contributing to the development of Open Educational Resources and e-learning resources utilizing simulations. Furthermore, Niels supervises and co-supervises several PhD students, reflecting his commitment to fostering new talent in the field.
