Biography

Nienke van Houten holds a BSc (Honours) in Microbiology from the University of Waterloo and a PhD in Molecular Immunology focused on vaccine design from Simon Fraser University. Her research specializes in developing strategies for producing epitope-targeting vaccines and exploring the use of engineered filamentous phage as vaccine carriers. After completing her PhD, she conducted postdoctoral research at SFU Faculty of Health Sciences, investigating the use of Hepatitis E virus-like particles as carriers for mucosal vaccines using reovirus and influenza infection models. Dr. van Houten joined Simon Fraser University as a lecturer in Health Sciences in August 2010, where she teaches a broad range of subjects including human biology, microbiology, virology, and immunology. Her teaching role includes being a Faculty Teaching Fellow, where she focuses on educational development and actively contributes to the Faculty's teaching and learning initiatives. She has developed workshops on topics such as plagiarism and has promoted innovative course designs to enhance the learning experience within the Faculty. In addition, she has organized teaching celebrations and facilitated various professional development activities.
