Biography

Dr. Nigel Blamey is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Western University. He received his PhD from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in 2000. His research focuses on fluid inclusion geochemical applications in geothermal systems and hydrothermal ore deposits, employing custom-built mass spectrometer systems for fluid inclusion gas analysis. He has pioneered the analysis of gas inclusions, quantitatively examining volatiles such as H2, CH4, H2O, and several others to investigate their geological and atmospheric implications. His recent projects also explore mass extinction events linked to ancient atmospheric changes. He has published extensively on various topics related to geochemistry and fluid inclusions, contributing to our understanding of both ancient and modern environmental conditions. Blamey actively collaborates on numerous research initiatives, including investigating fluid characteristics across hydrothermal systems in diverse geological settings, from ancient craters to modern sedimentary basins. He welcomes graduate students interested in mineral deposits and event stratigraphy, currently conducting research on MVT gold deposits and their fluid inclusion profiles.
