Biography

Nigel Kennell is an Honorary Research Member at the University of British Columbia, specializing in Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies. He earned both his MA and PhD from the University of Toronto, where he was influenced by scholars such as Malcolm McGregor and Anthony Barrett. Kennell introduced Greek epigraphy into his studies and developed a lifelong association with the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. He has had a teaching career that began at Memorial University of Newfoundland, where he remained until 2003, before moving to Athens to pursue intensive research. He has taught for a decade in the College Year in Athens, where he also served as the Director of the Canadian Archaeological Institute in Athens. His research interests include the history of Sparta, Greek epigraphy, and Greek civic culture during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. His contributions to the field include the dissertation on the public institutions of Roman Sparta and books such as 'Spartans: A New History' and 'Gymnasium Virtue: Education and Culture in Ancient Sparta.' Recently, he has focused on cultural memory and its impact on social cohesion in relation to Greek ephebates.
