Professor Nigel Laing, originally from Scotland, obtained his BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology in 1976 and his PhD in Physiology in 1979 from the University of Edinburgh. He completed a year as a Post-doc at the University of Oslo before joining the University of Western Australia in January 1981. In his early career, Laing was a developmental neurobiologist, investigating how motor neurons and muscles interact and determine each other’s properties in the developing embryo. Between 1987 and 1988, he retrained in molecular genetics at Duke University. After returning to Australia in 1988, he focused on developing research and diagnostics at the Australian Neuromuscular Research Institute and Royal Perth Hospital, identifying key mutations associated with various neuromuscular diseases. More recently, Laing’s research has shifted towards preventive genetics, emphasizing reproductive carrier screening, developing improved diagnostics, and creating treatments for genetic muscle diseases. He has developed significant projects in genetic carrier screening across Australia and has served as co-lead on substantial national health initiatives, contributing to advancements in understanding and preventing genetic disorders.
