Dr. Nigel Stocks

Biography

Nigel Stocks is an engineer and physicist known for his contributions to suprathreshold stochastic resonance (SSR) in cochlear implant technology. He attended Bingley Grammar School and received a BSc in Applied Physics Electronics in 1987 followed by a PhD in 1991 from Lancaster University, with a thesis focused on Experiments in Stochastic Nonlinear Dynamics. His early research at the Lancaster Nonlinear Group concentrated on the development of theories regarding nonequilibrium dynamical systems, particularly stochastic resonance. In 1993, Stocks joined the University of Warwick's Fluid Dynamics Research Centre, where he studied transition turbulence. He was awarded a TMR EU Fellowship in 1996 and worked alongside Riccardo Mannella at Pisa University before returning to Warwick as a Research Fellow. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2002, Reader in 2005, and full Professor in 2007. His research interests encompass stochastic nonlinear systems and biomimetics, with a focus on neural coding mechanisms in cochlear implants and the development of biomimetic signal processing techniques. In 2012, he was appointed Head of the School of Engineering at the University of Warwick, which is recognized as the UK's largest integrated School of Engineering.
