I am a metabolic researcher who heads the Cellular Bioenergetics Laboratory at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute. I completed my PhD in comparative physiology and biochemistry at the University of Wollongong in 2004. My research focuses on mitochondrial metabolism and its role in insulin resistance, which I studied during my postdoctoral work at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. I established my own lab dedicated to mitochondrial bioenergetics at UNSW Sydney. My goal is to understand metabolic dysfunction at the whole-body, cellular, and molecular levels and how these contribute to the pathogenesis of cardiometabolic diseases and cancer. I have received several competitive fellowships throughout my career and have held various academic positions, including Associate Professor and Professor at UNSW Sydney, and I am currently the Conjoint Professor at the Faculty of Medicine & Health. Additionally, I serve on several editorial boards and hold a vice-presidency at the Australian & New Zealand Obesity Society.
