Biography

Nihad M. Farooq is an Associate Professor in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He holds a Ph.D. in English from Duke University and a Joint M.A. in English and American Literature with Women's Studies from Brandeis University, along with an A.B. in English from Dartmouth College. His research traverses interdisciplinary fields, including American Atlantic Studies, ethnic studies, and cultural studies of science and ethnography. He is the author of the book 'Undisciplined: Science, Ethnography, and Personhood in the Americas, 1830-1940', published by New York University Press in 2016. The work explores the transformative encounters between scientists and indigenous diasporic populations during the long nineteenth century in the Americas. In addition, Farooq has received various awards for his teaching and research efforts, such as the Georgia Tech Class of 1940 W. Howard Ector Outstanding Teacher Award and the Andrew W. Mellon/William S. Vaughn Visiting Faculty Research Fellowship at Vanderbilt University. His expertise extends to American literature and culture, particularly in the context of the long nineteenth century, transatlantic studies, and critical studies of race and science.
