Biography

Nihat Berker is a Professor Emeritus of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is well-known for his research in statistical mechanics, particularly in the areas of phase transitions and critical phenomena. Berker graduated from Robert College and received his BS degrees in Physics and Chemistry from MIT in 1971. He then obtained his PhD in Physics from the University of Illinois in 1977. In 1988, he became a full professor of theoretical physics at MIT and later served as a professor and dean at the Istanbul Technical University in 1999. After leaving ITU, he worked as a professor at Koc University from 2005 to 2009 and then moved to Sabanci University, where he currently serves as president.
