Biography

Nik Palomares joined the Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin in the Fall of 2021. Before this, they were a Professor of Communication at the University of California, Davis for 17 years. A genderfluid/nonbinary Latinx quantitative social scientist, Nik's research focuses on understanding the communication pathways that impact psychological wellbeing. Their work aims to explore how various contextual factors affect individuals' mental health, from online bullying to interpersonal communication within familial and romantic relationships. Nik employs a social cognition perspective to investigate the fundamental processes that enable effective communication across diverse settings. They lead the Goal Understanding & Communication Lab where they teach courses on empirical research methods, gender communication, communication theory, and cyberbullying. Their research has been featured in prestigious journals such as Human Communication Research and the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication. Nik is also set to become the incoming Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Language and Social Psychology starting December 2023.
