Biography

Nikil Jayant grew up in Bangalore, India, and obtained a BSc in Physics and Mathematics from Mysore University, followed by a PhD in Electrical Communications Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science. He was a part of the doctoral program as a Research Associate at Stanford University. From 1968-1998, he worked at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey, which was part of the Bell System, AT&T, and Lucent Technologies. Jayant began his career at Bell Labs as a Member of the Technical Staff in the Acoustic Research Department and served as the Supervisor of the Voice Coding Group. He subsequently became the Department Head of Signal Processing Research and later the Advanced Audio Technology Department. He served as the Director of the Multimedia Communications Research Laboratory and was the Multimedia Director at Bell Laboratories. Jayant was a faculty member of the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 1998-2013, and he has held various leadership positions including Executive Director of Georgia Centers for Advanced Telecommunications Technology, Director of the Georgia Tech Broadband Institute, and Director of the Multimedia Communications Laboratory. He is also a co-founder of ATDC and has been involved with several companies such as EGT and VQLink. His research interests include Signal Compression, Multimedia Communications, Wireless Systems, Broadband Access, and Broadband Services.
