Dr. Nikki Robertson

Biography

Professor Nikki Robertson is a trained neonatal medicine specialist and an Honorary Consultant Neonatologist at the University of Edinburgh, where she focuses on perinatal neuroscience. She completed her medical training at the University of Edinburgh and entered the field of neonatal brain injury research at Hammersmith Hospital, Imperial College London, in the late 1990s. Professor Robertson's research has contributed significantly to the understanding of brain injury due to birth asphyxia, with a focus on MRI and MRS techniques to track the evolution of such injuries in newborns. She has been pivotal in the adoption of therapeutic hypothermia as a standard care practice for neonatal encephalopathy. Her ongoing research encompasses the safety and efficacy of adjunct therapies, such as melatonin and human umbilical mesenchymal stem cells, in enhancing neuroprotection for at-risk infants. Over the past two decades, she has supervised numerous PhD students and has been involved in various international collaborations aiming to optimize care for newborns. Professor Robertson remains committed to bridging the gap between laboratory research and clinical application, with the goal of improving neurocritical care for vulnerable infants.
