Biography

Niklas Harring is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer at the University of Gothenburg in the Department of Political Science. His research is primarily focused on the relationship between citizens and the state, particularly in the context of public acceptance or resistance to state interventions in climate policy. Harring addresses classical questions regarding the state's role in managing collective action problems, and studies how citizens perceive legitimate forms of state coercion. His work contributes to political science theory and aims to design effective and legitimate policy responses to today's pressing societal challenges. He is involved in several research projects that explore public acceptance of environmental policies, media influences on public support for health policies, and the social and political factors affecting renewable energy deployment. In addition to his research, Harring teaches various courses in political science, including European studies and environmental politics, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and supervises master's and doctoral students. He is also engaged in a capacity-building program focused on transitioning to an inclusive green economy, training civil servants in East African countries.
