Biography

Nikola Angelov is the Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry. He holds the Raul G. Caffesse, D.D.S., M.S., Dr. Odont. Distinguished Professorship in Periodontics. Dr. Angelov earned his DDS, MS, and PhD from Saints Cyril Methodius University, specializing in Oral Pathology and Periodontology. He taught at the Department of Oral Pathology and Periodontology in Macedonia from 1993 to 2001. In 2001, he received a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institutes of Health, where he contributed to the Oral Infection Immunity Branch. His doctoral dissertation focused on the role of Secretory Leukocyte Inhibitor in the healing of oral mucosal wounds. In 2004, he joined Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, where he achieved full professorship and served as section chief of the undergraduate program in Periodontics. He received the American Academy of Periodontology's Educator of the Year Award in 2008, and in 2013, he joined UTHealth School of Dentistry. His research interests include oral infection immunity, mucosal wound healing, periodontal microbiology, and dental implants. Dr. Angelov has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and is an invited speaker at prominent research meetings. He is a member of various professional societies both in the U.S. and abroad and serves on the editorial advisory boards of professional journals.
