Biography

Nikolaj Gadegaard is a Professor in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Glasgow and has over 20 years of experience in the field of nanoscale engineering of biological systems. He graduated from Copenhagen University in 1998 with a BSc in Chemistry and an MSc in Physics. After a brief position as a research assistant at Risø National Laboratory in Denmark, he continued his PhD studies in biophysics, completing his degree in 2002. Gadegaard was appointed as a lecturer in 2006, becoming a senior lecturer in 2010, a reader in 2012, and a full professor in 2014. He has also served as a visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and received the ERC Consolidator Award in 2015. His research focuses on the interplay of engineered biomaterials with cell function and fate, with significant contributions to the fields of stem cell regenerative medicine and mechanobiology. In total, he has published more than 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2021.
