Dr. Nikolaj Lübecker

Biography

Nikolaj Lübecker is a Professor in French Film Studies at the University of Oxford, affiliated with St John's College. His research interests encompass diverse works of literature and film, focusing particularly on how these areas explore the complexities of human experience in the twenty-first century. Lübecker's current projects include a Leverhulme-sponsored research project titled 'World Brain: Cultural History', as well as an examination of documentary films addressing political violence alongside colleague Daniele Rugo. His publications include 'Feel-Bad Film' (2015), which investigates contemporary filmmakers known for eliciting discomfort in audiences, and 'Twenty-First-Century Symbolism: Verlaine, Baudelaire, Mallarmé' (2022), which discusses the relevance of nineteenth-century poetry to contemporary thought on human subjectivity. In addition to his scholarly work, Lübecker actively teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses, guiding students through pivotal topics in French literature and film aesthetics. Over his career, he has published numerous articles in esteemed journals and co-edited significant volumes concerning critical themes in contemporary French culture and film theory.
