Nikolaos Bouklas joined the Cornell MAE faculty in January 2018. He previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering at EPFL, Switzerland, and held a postdoctoral appointment at the Oden Institute, University of Texas at Austin. He earned his PhD in Engineering Mechanics from the University of Texas at Austin in 2014 and obtained his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2008. His research focuses on theoretical computational solid mechanics, developing frameworks and advanced computational methods to improve the understanding of materials and structures, and enhance predictive capabilities for engineering applications. His work includes the fundamental study of soft materials, active materials, biomaterials, fracture instabilities, multiscale modeling, and coupled multi-physical systems. Recently, his lab has focused on machine learning-enabled constitutive models and solutions for partial differential equations using a combination of data and physical principles. In teaching, he is interested in mechanics of materials, solid mechanics, continuum mechanics, thermodynamics, and computational mechanics.
