Biography

Nikolaos Giannopoulos is currently appointed as an Assistant Professor of International European Law at the Faculty of Law of Utrecht University and serves as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in EU Energy Law at the Utrecht Centre for Water, Oceans Sustainability Law (UCWOSL). His current research focuses on legal regulatory issues related to the energy transition and the multi-layered EU legal order, with a special interest in environmental economic law and the relationships and/or lack thereof between these fields. Nikolaos conducted his PhD research on international EU law at the University of Utrecht within the ERC project titled 'Accommodating New Interests at Sea: Legal Tools for Sustainable Ocean Governance'. He graduated with a Law degree from the University of Athens and holds multiple LLM degrees in Public Law, European Integration Public Law, and Public International Law from the University of Athens and Panteion University, all with distinction. He has worked as a visiting research fellow at Oxford University and has shared his expertise at numerous international conferences and workshops. His published works cover various topics in law including the law of the sea, international environmental law, international investment law, and EU human rights law. Nikolaos is also a qualified lawyer with the Athens Bar Association, where he has practiced public administrative law for several years.
