Biography

Nikolaos Karathanasopoulos is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at New York University Tandon School of Engineering. His research interests are centered around the development and modeling of advanced materials and structures for mechanical, aerospace, and bioengineering applications. He is currently leading ongoing research projects focused on creating advanced lightweight composite materials that exhibit extraordinary static and dynamic performance attributes, as well as unique functional behaviors. His work integrates experimental and numerical analysis with artificial intelligence techniques, which are core to his research activities. He has developed novel hybrid manufacturing processes aimed at designing sustainable structures, accompanied by extensive physics-based models and AI techniques to simulate observed phenomena and guide the mechanical analysis and design of parts. Professor Karathanasopoulos holds a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Materials from the University of California, Berkeley, and a PhD in Computational Mechanics from ETH Zürich. He has previous experience modeling and analyzing structures in the private sector in Switzerland and was a visiting researcher at CNRS in France and a research associate on privately funded projects at ETH Zürich. He is a recipient of the Marie Sklodowska Curie award.
