Biography

Nikolas Bowie is a Louis D. Brandeis Professor at Harvard Law School, where he teaches federal constitutional law, state constitutional law, and local government law. His research centers on critical legal histories and democracy in the United States. Professor Bowie received the Sacks-Freund Award for Teaching Excellence in 2021 from the graduating class at Harvard Law School. His scholarship has been published in prestigious journals including the Harvard Law Review, Law and History Review, Stanford Law Review, and Yale Law Journal. In addition to his teaching and writing, he is actively engaged in local government and civil rights advocacy in the Boston area. He serves on the boards of the American Association of University Professors, Lawyers for Civil Rights, and the People’s Parity Project. A graduate of Yale University with a B.A. in History in 2009, he earned his A.M. in History from Harvard University in 2011, his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2014, and his Ph.D. in History from Harvard University in 2018. Professor Bowie also clerked for Judge Jeffrey Sutton on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and Justice Sonia Sotomayor on the U.S. Supreme Court.
