Dr. Nikolaus Plesnila

Biography

Nikolaus Plesnila is a professor and a principal investigator at the LMU Munich University Hospital, specializing in the Laboratory of Experimental Stroke Research. His research primarily focuses on brain microvessels in both health and disease, striving to develop novel therapeutic strategies for patients suffering from various brain disorders. His lab utilizes in vitro and in vivo models to explore conditions like ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, brain trauma, and migraine. Plesnila's team employs advanced techniques such as AAV- nanoparticle-based labeling and multi-photon microscopy to investigate the neurovascular structure and function. His studies have provided critical insights into the role of cerebral microcirculation during brain injury and have established therapeutic avenues involving inhaled nitric oxide to mitigate cerebral microvasospasm and improve patient outcomes. He is actively engaged in understanding the mechanisms of neurovascular dysfunction following brain hemorrhage and exploring the consequences of ischemia at the microvascular level.
