Biography

Nikolia is a registered architect with a particular interest in contemporary architecture within historic settings. He is trained as an architect and engineer at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with an Erasmus exchange at L'École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Paris-La Villette. He holds an MSc in Architectural Conservation and a PhD in Architecture from the University of Edinburgh. Nikolia has worked in architectural practices across Greece, France, and the UK from 2011 to 2019. Since 2013, he has delivered teaching in programs at the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA), focusing on historic urban environments. His research and teaching explore methodologies to address the correspondences between architecture, heritage, culture, and society. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and integrates his professional experience into teaching by developing interdisciplinary approaches that promote research-led activities in architectural studios. His research considers the architectural conservation process in terms of impermanence and fluidity, aimed at adapting, converting, and preserving existing buildings alongside their ecosystems. He employs digital toolkits to understand the past and build spatial narratives, utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and LiDAR technology.
