Nils Daniel Forkert is a Full Professor at the University of Calgary in the Departments of Radiology, Clinical Neurosciences, and Electrical Software Engineering. He received his German diploma in Computer Science from the University of Hamburg, a master’s degree in Medical Physics from the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Hamburg. Forkert completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Medical Image Processing at Stanford University before joining the University of Calgary as an Assistant Professor in 2014. He is an imaging machine learning scientist who develops new image processing methods, predictive algorithms, and software tools for the analysis of medical data. His work includes extracting clinically relevant parameters and biomarkers from medical data describing the morphology and function of organs that support clinical studies and pre-clinical research. Forkert is the Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Medical Image Analysis and the Director of the Child Health Data Science Program at the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute, where he focuses on machine learning in neuroscience. He has published over 220 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 100 full-length proceedings papers, and 170 conference abstracts, and has received significant funding from various Canadian health and research organizations. Currently, he supervises multiple postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, demonstrating his commitment to training the next generation of data science researchers.
