Nina Duthie is a scholar specializing in Chinese literature and cultural history. She received her Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Cultures from Columbia University in the spring of 2015. Her research focuses on narrative literature from early medieval China, particularly during the period of 220–907 CE, with an emphasis on texts from the Northern Dynasties. Currently, she is revising her dissertation titled “Origins, Ancestors, Imperial Authority Early Northern Wei Historiography” for publication as a monograph. This project delves into the representation of the Tuoba Xianbei rulers of the Northern Wei state (386–534 CE) and explores themes related to mythology, ritual, and Buddhist writing as depicted in the sixth-century historical text, Wei Shu (History of the Northern Wei). At UCLA's Asian Languages and Cultures Department, she teaches undergraduate courses covering topics such as premodern Chinese narrative fiction, classical Chinese, early Chinese philosophy, and the survey of Chinese civilization.
