Biography

Nina Tannenwald is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Political Science at Brown University. Her research focuses on the role of international institutions, norms, and ideas in global security issues, with particular attention to efforts to control weapons of mass destruction and the implications of human rights laws during warfare. She authored "The Nuclear Taboo: The United States and the Non-Use of Nuclear Weapons, 1945," published by Cambridge University Press in 2007, which received the Lepgold Prize in 2009 for the best book in international relations. Her current work includes examining the future of the nuclear normative order and the compliance and effectiveness of laws of war. Tannenwald has published in major journals such as International Organization, International Security, and Ethics & International Affairs. Tannenwald possesses a Ph.D. in international relations from Cornell University and a master's degree from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. She has actively contributed to advancing dialogues around international security and arms control.
