Nina Ullrich is a researcher in the field of Biomedical Engineering with a focus on cardiology and physiology. She completed her studies in Biology, Zoology, and Neurobiology at the University of Vienna and the University of Aix-Marseille. She earned her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the Catholic University of Leuven, where she characterized the function of TRP channels under the supervision of Professor Bernd Nilius. Dr. Ullrich conducted her postdoctoral research at the Imperial College London in the Cardiac Medicine unit, investigating the cardio-protective effects of estrogen derivatives and phytoestrogens on the electrical properties of cardiac cells. In 2007, she joined the Department of Physiology at the University of Bern under Professor Ernst Niggli, focusing on cardiac and skeletal muscle excitation-contraction coupling and calcium signaling in disease models. In 2011, she initiated a SNF-Ambizione research fellowship, leading the establishment of a cardiac stem cell research unit where she is actively working on the functional characterization of stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes to investigate their capacity to integrate into the injured heart.
