Biography

Ning Hsieh's scholarship broadly concerns health equity, the stress process, social connection, and issues related to sexuality, gender, race, and ethnicity. His current research examines the health and healthcare inequities faced by vulnerable populations, including sexual and gender minorities, racial and ethnic minorities, and older adults. Hsieh addresses questions regarding how stigma, stress, personal relationships, and community participation influence health and well-being in vulnerable populations throughout the life course. Additionally, he explores how the intersection of race, ethnicity, sexuality, and gender shapes individuals' experiences with healthcare and their health outcomes. His research is published in peer-reviewed journals and book volumes, and he has received funding from the National Institute on Aging and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Hsieh's scholarship has been recognized with awards from the American Sociological Association and the Society for the Study of Social Problems. Prior to his role at Michigan State University, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Chicago and earned his doctoral degree in demography and sociology from the University of Pennsylvania.
