Biography

Nipam Patel is a prominent figure in the field of modern evolutionary developmental biology, with a specific focus on the evolution of body patterning, segmentation, regeneration, and structural coloration. He grew up in El Paso, Texas, and received his A.B. in Biology from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in Biology from Stanford University. Prior to his current role as Director of the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), he was a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he co-chaired the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology and was a professor in the Department of Integrative Biology. Patel has held various academic positions, including at the University of Chicago, where he was a faculty member in Organismal Biology and Anatomy, and served as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. He has been a dedicated member of the MBL community and has taught courses in Embryology since 2001. His scientific expertise includes the development of novel genetic model organisms for biological study, aimed at revealing insights into human biology through the application of advanced imaging technologies. Patel has authored over 130 scientific publications and has served as editor for the journal Development from 2009 to 2018, in addition to being on the editorial boards of various biological sciences journals. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has received numerous honors throughout his career, highlighting his contributions to the field.
