Biography

Nirao Shah is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Department of Neurobiology at Stanford University. His research focuses on understanding how the brain generates social interactions and the differences that exist between sexes regarding these interactions. Throughout his academic career, he has developed genetic approaches to identify neural pathways that regulate social behaviors, providing critical insights into the neural mechanisms underpinning social behavior relevant to conditions such as autism, dementia, mood disorders, and PTSD. After completing his medical training, he received his PhD from Caltech in stem cells, where he identified mechanisms that control the differentiation of stem cells into peripheral nervous system neurons. He has held various academic appointments and directorships, including the Director of the Neurosciences Graduate Program at Stanford's School of Medicine. Nirao has been recognized with multiple awards for his contributions to neuroscience, including the Pioneer Award from NIH and the Young Investigator Award from NARSAD.
