Dr. Nirekha De Silva

Biography

Nirekha De Silva is an Adjunct Associate Lecturer at the University of New South Wales, specializing in the fields of addiction, rehabilitation, and social research. With over 20 years of experience, she has engaged in research project implementation across various countries, focusing on cultural diversity, migration, and the wellbeing of vulnerable communities. Nirekha holds a PhD in Law from Griffith University, where her thesis centered on the healing practices and cultural roles of government. Her educational background also includes a Master's in Human Rights from the University of Colombo and a BA in Sociology from York University in Canada. Throughout her career, she has worked with several international organizations, including Save the Children and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Cultural Centre, implementing programs aimed at supporting vulnerable populations such as children and survivors of gender-based violence. Nirekha is actively involved in academic research and has contributed to various publications and grants focused on child protection and the rights of women and minorities. She has also played a crucial role in societal reforms in Sri Lanka, promoting cultural understanding and empowering marginalized communities, while currently working on AOD treatment research at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre at UNSW.
