Dr. Nirusha Thavarajah

Biography

Nirusha Thavarajah is an Associate Professor in the Teaching Stream at the University of Toronto Scarborough, Department of Chemistry. She received her Bachelor of Science with Honours in Biological Chemistry, as well as a PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from the University of Toronto. Following her doctoral studies, she completed a three-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, focusing on organic medicinal chemistry. In addition to her scientific qualifications, she holds a Master of Laws in Intellectual Property Law from Osgoode Hall Law School and a Master of Education specializing in Higher Education from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Over the years, she has served in various roles across multiple campuses within the University of Toronto, moving from Sessional Lecturer to her current rank of Associate Professor. Her teaching encompasses a wide array of chemistry courses, and she actively engages in research related to sustainable agricultural practices and student engagement methodologies. She has published over 25 research articles and co-leads the development of innovative teaching tools for introductory chemistry courses. Prof. Thavarajah is deeply involved in curriculum development and mentorship initiatives and has received several teaching awards in recognition of her contributions to chemistry education.
