Biography

Noah Kaye received undergraduate degrees from Princeton and Cambridge, and holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology from the University of California, Berkeley. His 2022 book, 'Attalids of Pergamon in Anatolia: Money, Culture, and State Power' (Cambridge), is a comprehensive study of the political economy and cultural politics of a major, yet often misunderstood, ancient empire, highlighting the contemporary relevance of issues concerning taxation and belonging. Professor Kaye's work as an ancient historian focuses on the relationship between cultural identity and institutional change. He has conducted research in Greece and served as the Heinrich Schliemann Fellow at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, as well as a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Haifa and a Senior Fellow at Koç University's Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations. His current research projects include the biography of the city of Antalya in Turkey, the publication of Seleukid coins from the Ödemiş Museum (Hypaipa/Hypaepa in ancient Lydia), and an archaeoacoustic study of a Samaritan inscription from the Emmaus-Nicopolis Chamberlain Warren Samaritan Collection at Michigan State University. He also actively participates in the Kale Tepesi Excavations in ancient Phrygia.
