Biography

Noah Nathan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His research focuses on electoral politics, political economy, urban politics, and issues related to Africa. He authored the book "Scarce State: Inequality, Political Power, and the Hinterland" (Cambridge University Press, 2023), which explores the long-term effects of state-building on economic inequality, elite capture, clientelism, and violence. His earlier work, "Electoral Politics in Africa’s Urban Transition: Class and Ethnicity in Ghana" (Cambridge University Press, 2019), examines the impacts of urbanization on ethnicity, clientelism, and the emergence of programmatic politics. His research has been published in prestigious journals such as the American Journal of Political Science, the American Political Science Review, and the British Journal of Political Science, contributing to the broader understanding of political dynamics in urban and rural contexts in Africa. Nathan received his PhD in Government from Harvard University in 2016.
