Biography

Noah Planavsky is a physicist specializing in isotope geochemistry, with a focus on environmental change and the history of Earth's atmosphere. His research integrates field studies and analytical chemistry, utilizing novel isotope systems and geochemical modeling to investigate atmospheric evolution, particularly in relation to oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations. His current projects aim to understand changes in oceanic oxygen levels and track primary productivity over geological time, as well as explore carbon capture through enhanced mineral weathering in both marine and terrestrial contexts. Planavsky leads a research group within the Yale Geochemistry Center, and his lab investigates silicate weathering processes and their implications for the co-evolution of life, climate, and nutrient cycling. Group members are exploring various topics, including the verification of carbon capture technologies and the implications of enhanced silicate weathering for soil chemistry and greenhouse gas fluxes. Through this work, he contributes to our understanding of Earth's geological and atmospheric history and the potential for negative emissions technologies.
